DuraFlex Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Damper Repair: The Greenwich Owner’s Guide

We stock and install DuraFlex-compatible damper repair parts throughout Greenwich, with most repairs running between $285 and $640 installed depending on whether it’s a top-seal damper cable, a throat damper plate, or the full damper assembly. Most jobs are done same-day once we’ve got eyes on the part. The way Greenwich homeowners usually find us is one of two ways: a damper that won’t close all the way in January and the living room smells like last night’s fire, or a damper that’s rusted through and won’t open at all when the temperature finally drops below 40.

Call (516) 399-5497

You bought a DuraFlex product because it holds up. Most of the time it does. But dampers live in the worst spot in the system, and in Greenwich the salt air off the Sound plus winter freeze-thaw cycles put them through more than the manufacturer’s average. When they fail, the failure is usually two parts: mechanical (cable, hinge, pivot) or material (rust-through, warpage). The fix is a repair, not a mystery. You’ll get a written price and the part name before anyone climbs onto the roof.

  • Parts stocked on the Greenwich trucks: DuraFlex-top-seal damper cables, damper plates in common sizes, spring assemblies, and mounting hardware.
  • Typical installed cost: $285-$640. You’ll see the exact number on a written quote before work starts.
  • What you’ll walk away with: a photo record showing the old part, the new part, and the finished install. No exceptions, per Haven Standard Clause 4.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex makes dampers for two broad applications: top-sealing dampers that sit at the flue exit (often paired with a stainless liner system), and traditional throat dampers that sit just above the firebox. The repair path is different for each. Top-seal dampers typically fail at the cable or the spring, and the fix usually means a cable replacement and re-tension, not a full damper swap. Throat dampers fail at the cast-iron or stainless plate itself, or the pivot pins, and the fix is a plate replacement or frame repair.

Before we order or pull anything from the truck, we identify the part two ways: the model stamp on the damper frame (usually on the underside near the pivot), and the throat or flue measurement. DuraFlex top-seal dampers are sized to the flue interior, and Greenwich chimneys are all over the map. We’ve seen backcountry estate flues that measure 13×13 with custom caps, and Cos Cob colonials with 8×8 clay liners. The damper has to match the flue, not the firebox. If a previous owner installed a top-seal that’s a half-inch shy on one side, the cable is out of plumb, and you’ll get binding, squealing, and early failure. We measure before we quote. That’s why we don’t give phone quotes for damper repairs without a quick camera look.

On OEM vs. aftermarket: we stock DuraFlex OEM parts for common sizes and series, and we’ll also install specific aftermarket equivalents where they match or exceed the original spec (usually in stainless grade or cable coating). We tell you which is which on the written quote. Level Two Chimney Greenwich is an independent service provider, not affiliated with DuraFlex, but we source the parts through Haven’s buying network to keep pricing honest alongside the other brands we stock: HeatShield and Gelco.

Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Repair Is Failing

Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Repair Is Failing
  • The handle moves but the damper doesn’t. This is the classic cable failure on a top-seal damper. The cable has stretched, frayed, or snapped at the connection point.
  • You hear a squeal or scrape when you open or close it. Usually a misaligned pivot or a spring that’s lost tension, which throws the whole assembly off-axis.
  • The damper won’t stay open. On a throat damper, a worn pivot pin or warped plate lets the damper drift closed mid-fire. Good way to smoke out the living room.
  • You see rust flakes or pinholes in the plate. South-facing chimneys on the Sound side of Greenwich get the worst of it. Salt air accelerates corrosion and once pinholes start, the damper’s toast.
  • Cold air pours down the flue even when the damper’s shut. The damper plate is warped or the gasket has failed. Your heating bill notices before you do.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the range as it shakes out in Greenwich:

  • Cable replacement on an existing top-seal DuraFlex damper: $285-$365 if the damper plate and frame are sound and it’s a clean swap from the roof or firebox.
  • Throat damper plate replacement: $320-$480 depending on plate material and whether the frame needs re-anchoring.
  • Full top-seal damper replacement: $480-$640 when the original damper is beyond repair and we’re pulling it and installing a new one sized to the flue.
  • Full throat damper assembly replacement: $395-$585 when the frame is rusted through and the whole assembly has to come out.

Every quote is written before work starts. You’ll see the part name, the part cost, the labor, and the warranty on the line items. We don’t do “call for a quote.” We don’t do surprise add-ons after the fact. Our repair work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we make it right. And every job includes the photo record under Haven Standard Clause 4: old part out, new part in, and a camera shot of the finished install so you can see what we did without climbing a ladder to check.

Let’s be honest about what’s safe to check versus what you shouldn’t try to fix yourself. You can absolutely look up the flue with a flashlight and check for obvious rust or a damper plate that’s visibly warped. You can move the handle and listen for grinding. You can check whether cold air is spilling into the room on a windy day. None of that risks anything.

But damper repair on a DuraFlex unit means working either at the top of the chimney (roof height, ladders, wind exposure) or inside the firebox with the assembly removed. Cables that snap under tension can take a finger with them. A top-seal assembly under spring load is not a thing you want to learn about the hard way. And a bad install creates a worse problem: a damper that won’t seal means carbon monoxide backdraft risk, not just a cold draft. We’re Greenwich-based and our trucks are stocked for the common DuraFlex failures. Call (516) 399-5497 and we’ll get a tech out with a camera and a written price.
